The Ballet Nacional de Cuba (BNC), founded on October 28, 1948, by Alicia Alonso, Fernando Alonso, and Alberto Alonso, stands as a beacon of cultural excellence and a global ambassador for the Cuban Method of Ballet. Initially named Ballet Alicia Alonso, the company quickly gained prominence, performing across Latin America and establishing itself as a cornerstone of Cuban identity.

The BNC is celebrated for its technical mastery and expressive artistry, rooted in the Cuban School of Ballet, which blends classical rigor with the vibrant cultural heritage of Cuba. This unique approach emphasizes fluidity, emotional depth, and the harmonious integration of movement, making Cuban-trained dancers highly sought after worldwide.

In 1950, the company founded the National Ballet Academy, the first of its kind in Cuba, to nurture future generations of dancers. This institution became a hub for artistic innovation, attracting renowned international instructors and producing stars who have graced stages globally. The academy complemented its Cuban faculty with experts from Russia, England, and other countries, enriching the technical and artistic training of its students.

The BNC’s repertoire is vast and diverse, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary works, reflecting its commitment to artistic evolution. The company has performed in nearly every corner of the world, earning acclaim for its dedication to making ballet accessible to all sectors of society. Free or low-cost performances in stadiums, amphitheaters, and public squares have brought the art form to audiences who might otherwise never experience it.

Today, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba is recognized as one of the top five classical ballet companies globally, alongside the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Ballet of London, the American Ballet Theatre, and the Bolshoi Ballet. Its legacy is a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, who dreamed of making Cuba a center for ballet in Latin America.
