This week, in What’s happening in Brazil, we take a look at the speech of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro at the Climate Summit organized by the president of the United States, Joe Biden. Bolsonaro claimed to have strengthened environmental agencies, increased resources to combat climate change, and pledged to eliminate illegal logging by 2030. The data on environmental issues shows a very different picture, with shrinking budgets adding to the escalation of fires and deforestation.
We also debate the further delays in the vaccination of priority groups due to lack of raw material to produce the vaccines. Previously set to end in May, the vaccination is now expected to be completed by September. Meanwhile, COVID-19 continues to spread across the country.
