Journalist José Bernardes hosts our weekly English-language show featuring the latest news and fun facts about Brazil - Screen capture/Brasil de Fato

This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we learn a little more about how the International Criminal Court, also known as the Hague Tribunal, is looking into accusations made against Jair Bolsonaro. For the first time in its history, the Court is taking the preliminary steps that may eventually lead to an official inquiry and investigation into the actions of a Brazilian president. This all comes with the backdrop of Brazil’s United Nations Human Development Index, or HDI, plummeting over the past year, according to a report released this week.

In our Story of the Week segment, we take a look at how the end of the emergency assistance benefits package, which was distributed to over 65 million Brazilians during the pandemic, may signal ruin for countless families. With the covid-19 outbreak still ravaging the country’s healthcare system and economy, many will not be able to get by once the aid is cut off for good.

This week’s Culture Talk sheds light on the lives of the Krenak people, a native tribe that inhabits the state of Minas Gerais, and like all of the native population, is neglected by Federal Authorities, all the while being threatened by illegal loggers, cattle ranchers, land grabbers and multinational corporations. Brasil de Fato spoke with Krenak leader, Ailton Krenak, who maintains that modern man’s relationship with nature, is at the root of many of the world’s problems.

In our last segment, Brazilianism, we wrap things up by sharing our Brazilian culture with the audience. Learn how to make a delicious local dish, and enjoy some quality local music.
