Journalist José Bernardes hosts our weekly English-language show featuring the latest news and fun facts about Brazil - Screen capture/Brasil de Fato

This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we take a look at the sad, yet seemingly recurring story of the brutal murder of a black man in the country. On November 19th, on the eve of Black Awareness Day, a black shop goer was beaten to death by two Carrefour supermarket security guards, for having gotten into a verbal altercation with an employee.

In our story of the week, we how fifteen years ago, the FTAA, or Free Trade Area of the Americas was rejected, after a long and brilliant resistance campaign, organized by social movements and a pack of progressive governments from Latin America. The deal would have essentially turned the southern part of the continent into a North American colony. Its rejection was championed by historical figures such as Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Nestor Kirchner and Lula da Silva.

In culture news, this week we take a look at the careers of two important Brazilian artists, one current and one with an already established legacy. Alê Santo and Sônia Braga represent different epochs in Brazil, as well as different types of art, however both, are the same in trying to change old paradigms and fight injustices through their artistic expression.

Lastly, as is tradition on our show, we wrap things up with our Brazilianism segment, where you get to learn a delicious local recipe and listen to some quality local music.
